About

Marcela Gonzalez is an Afro-Latine artist born in Tampa, Florida, but raised in Puerto Rico in a small sub-barrio of Quintana in Hato Rey, San Juan. They would spend their weekends crawling through rainforests and rolling down the mountains of Santa Olaya, Bayamón. It is in island life that their art world was revealed.
They have been drawing since they were a young child; their innate skill for visual conceptualization and communication through the arts has opened opportunities in various fields as a freelance artist.
Marcela has participated in various group exhibitions at their institutions and remotely during the Coronavirus pandemic. They earned their BA in Studio Art with a concentration in Painting from the University of South Florida in 2020. They are now entering their third year teaching digital art at a Florida elementary charter school for the arts.

I spent most of my childhood in Puerto Rico, where I developed a wide range of ideas and inspirations for my art. I still have the internal drive to create, inspired by the impact of local artisans and familial ties to the arts. My mother is an artist who taught at the university level for many years, including me, when creating her lesson plans. I currently reside in the Village of The Arts and working towards becoming a proactive member of my community.
